For the most part, the ground floor of the tower is a single enclosed area of wide flagstones; but to either side of the main entrance a narrow gutter runs inward along the paving, and several sturdy wooden partitions, about six feet high, enclose off narrow bays as if to stall beasts there. This area of the Tower — accurately or not — has acquired the name of 'the old stables'.

The bay nearest to the entrance arch on the northern side has been partially taken apart in order to construct the lift-shaft in its place (and, to all appearances, in order to furnish some of the timbers for its construction), but the remaining stalls still stand. Currently, they serve to stable a collection of gardening tools ranging from trowels to mower, and various other bulky items. The latter include a stepladder, an old rabbit hutch that seems to have suffered severe fox attack, and a bizarre four-wheeled contraption that appears to be the unhappy result of miscegenation between a go-cart and a bicycle trailer.
