The small, dark room on one side of the ground floor of the Ivory Tower contains a large, many-pronged hook hung from the roofbeams, chandelier fashion, and a further series of hooks bestowed around the walls. It serves as a cloakroom for visitors and all outdoor garments, and the walls are hung with coats, jackets, waterproofs and mackintoshes, hats, scarves, hoods and even a stray sou'wester, while the benches below hold wellingtons and walking-boots, as well as three hobby-horses and balls of all sizes. The room tends to hold an aroma of damp wool and decaying rubber that is at once familiar and slightly nauseating.
